About the Route

Rich History and Crystal Clear Waters.

The Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad opened in 1904, winding 18.6 miles between Dundon (now the Rail Explorers Depot) and Widen.

The Elk River Coal & Lumber Co’s magnificent steam engines once hauled thousands of tons of coal from the mine at Widen, and millions of feet of lumber from the sawmill at Swandale.

During a coal miners’ strike of 1952 the Sand Fork Bridge was dynamited and completely destroyed.

Severe flooding in 2016 again destroyed the Sand Fork Bridge and many other sections of the railroad were washed away. Federal, State and local efforts ensured that the railroad was rebuilt and able to be used today.
