About the Route

Uncover the Golden Hills of California.

The Amador Central Railroad, originally called the Ione and Eastern was built in 1904 to connect the town of Martell with the Southern Pacific Railroad in Ione.

As well as passengers, the Amador Central carried freight that included clay, mining equipment, gold and copper ore, and timber products.

The railroad changed hands many times over the years, and although regular passenger service ended in 1932 frieght operations continued until the early 2000s.

The Amador Central Railroad now hosts regular 'speeder' rides and the Rail Explorers railbike excursions.
