About the Route

Mightier than the Concrete Jungle.

The Ulster & Delaware Railroad once stretched 107 miles, from Kingston Point on the Hudson River all the way to Oneonta. Phoenicia Station was a major hub, connecting to a narrow gauge railroad to Hunter.

Construction began in 1868 and ridership peaked in 1913, when 676,000 passengers rode the trains up into the Catskills.

Passenger service ended in 1954 and freight followed in 1976. Ulster County purchased the line in 1979 and the Catskill Mountain Railroad revived a portion of the corridor to offer scenic train rides.

Rail Explorers is proud to once again welcome locals and visitors to ride these scenic and historic rails.
